The National Aviary – Garden Room
The National Aviary in Pittsburgh is a treasure located in the North Side section of the City adjacent to the Allegheny Commons Park. After years of fundraising and planning the Aviary entrusted Jendoco Construction with the construction of an ambitious, and beautifully designed renovation and addition to their unique facility. The main feature is The Garden Room, a 4,200 sf venue that offers open-air access with stunning views of the adjacent 150 year old staple of Pittsburgh Public Parks. The glass-enclosed structure hosts weddings, special events, and educational programs while showcasing a retractable wall consisting of floor to ceiling, energy-efficient, bird-safe glass.
Rising just above the surrounding historic brick wall which needed to be protected and restored during the close-quarters construction. The addition keeps with The National Aviary’s practice of providing the best possible care for their birds through conservation, which dovetailed into selecting a team that would focus on keeping the wild birds in the neighboring park safe. The LEED Gold project was designed by Perfido Weiskopf Wagstaff + Goettel Architects along with CJL Engineering, Walker Glass, Vitro Glass and the American Bird Conservancy to consider a range of glass options to reduce bird collisions while enhancing the bright, open aesthetic of the new space. The project also includes a new commercial kitchen, a 2,200 sf lobby/educational area, and of course a beautifully designed garden within the walled exterior space.
Construction took place during the Covid-19 crisis and Jendoco diligently adhered to every appropriate protocol to keep the staff and workers safe. Jendoco is proud to have been a part of such a unique project.
