Beth Shalom – Squirrel Hill
Beth Shalom is a three building complex connected by common corridors and doorways. These consist of the main worship area, community center and school. While all areas were remodeled, the community center and school were completely demolished internally and rebuilt. The community center, a five story structure now houses two chapels, four libraries, a special education department, youth center and gymnasium.
The original two-story school, was completely remodeled and also increased in size by creating a third floor. In so doing it allowed for proper separation of children and related educational functions. It also included replacing the existing front masonry façade and replacing it in order to continue the appearance of the original synagogue design.
The synagogue and school presented a special challenge with a limited time frame - both phases were completed in time for the High Holy Days worship and children returning as scheduled.
Jendoco Construction Corporation won the 1999 MBA Building Excellence Award for this project and was also the recipient of the 1999 Golden Trowel Grand Award.
